ROOT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT AND SOD LAYER QUALITY AS AFFECTED BY SPECIES COMPOSITION OF LAWNS

Paper deals with the dynamics of root system development for monocultures and grass mixtures on sod-podzolic soils with high loam and sand content in the Ryazan region. The research tested root system parameters: tillering coefficient, root size and mass of lawn grass swards in 2012–2014. Monocultures of bluegrass, creeping red fescue and creeping bentgrass, grass mixture of creeping red fescue, bluegrass and creeping bentgrass as well as creeping bentgrass, red fescue, bluegrass and creeping red fescue had the highest root mass. The lowest root mass was formed by perennial ryegrass in the second and third year and by three-component sward (red fescue, sheep fescue, perennial ryegrass) in the third year. Lawn swards developed more extensive root system on loam soils compared to the sandy ones. The research proved the effective use of monocultures of red fescue, creeping bentgrass, bluegrass, creeping red fescue and grass mixtures of red fescue (50%), bluegrass (40%) and creeping bentgrass (10%), as well as creeping bentgrass (35%), red fescue (3,5%), bluegrass (20%) and creeping red fescue (10%). More stable sod cover developed on sod-podzolic clay loam due to root mass association with silt units.
