• • • Main goals and results of perennial grass breeding and seed production in the Central Chernozem region
Increase in land area of perennial grasses both improves plant protein yield and maintains soil fertility through natural environment-improving properties of forage crops and their mixtures. The main goal of Voronezh Research Station is breeding and production of new generation varieties of perennial grasses that are highly resistant to abiotic and biotic stresses, provide high yield and have positive influence on the environment. The paper reports on spectrum of research at the Station as well as objectives and outlooks in plant breeding and seed production of perennial plants. It presents the results on breeding of leading legumes and gramineous: bastard alfalfa, red clover, smooth brome etc. Improvement in forage resource availability in the steppe requires breeding of drought-tolerant species: crested wheat grass, medick and hungarian sainfoin. Lately significant demand for lawn plants appeared. The Station obtained red fescue “Diana” for lawns and grasslands-pasture, perennial ryegrass “Voronezhskiy”, giant bentgrass “Alba”. Great attention is being paid to the development of cultivation technologies for new seed varieties. It is highly important to grow crops in accordance to modern resource- and energy-saving technologies for crop cultivation and harvest that are proved to be effective and adjusted to various regions.
