Due to intensification of drought season as a result of climate change, cultivation of drought-tolerant crops is required to improve grain fodder production in summer, especially grain sorghum. Paper deals with the analyses of seeding rate and fertilization effects on sorghum productivity in the forest-steppe of the Middle Volga region. It includes experimentally proved values of optimal seeding rates for sorghum varieties “Slavyanka” and “Premera” on the background of mineral fertilization. The experiment tested the effects of climate, variety qualities and mineral nutrition on sorghum yield capacity. Sorghum productivity was influenced by year, variety, fertilizer application and determined via seeding rate. “Slavyanka” performed the best when sowed through 0.8 million germinated seeds per 1 ha: 2.28 t ha-1 — no fertilizers and 2.60 t ha-1 — under fertilization. “Premera” showed higher yield values under seeding rate of up to 1.2 million germinated seeds ha-1, however yield increase, compared to seeding rate of 0.8 million germinated seeds ha-1, was not significant, making seeding rate above 0.8 million germinated seeds ha-1 useless. “Slavyanka” and “Premera” was better sown rows, inter-row spacing — 15 cm, seeding rate — 0.8 million germinated seeds ha-1 on the background of N45P45K45, providing grain yield of 2.47–2.60 t ha-1.
