• • • Bastard alfalfa productivity as affected by microbial preparations in the Leningrad Region
Paper deals with revealing effective strains of nodule bacteria, the best symbioses with alfalfa in the Leningrad region. Experiment took place on the territory of St. Petersburg State Agrarian University, Department of Crop Production n. a. I.A. Stebut in 2012–2014. First-season alfalfa varieties “Agniya” and “Taisiya” performed as objects of the study (the All-Russian Williams Fodder Research Institute). Strains of Sinorhizobium meliloti were used for seed inoculation: master seed strain “415b” and promising strains “A-4” (“AK 127”), “A-5” (“AK 052”), “A-6” (“AK 118”), obtained from the All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Microbiology. Inoculation of alfalfa seeds with bacterium preparations increased shoot-forming capacity. Also, their application positively affected formation of alfalfa symbiotic apparatus. Maximum number of active nodules happened after “А-5” and “А-6” application. However microbial preparations decreased size of a nodule by 3–12 times, depending on the variety and preparation, but increased nodule quantity per one plant. Inoculation of alfalfa by bacterium preparations showed to be an effective agrotechnical procedure. Strains “А-5” and “А-6” improved the productivity of bastard alfalfa by 2.5–2.6 times for “Agniya” and 1.9 times for “Taisiya”.
