• • • Effectiveness of bastard alfalfa and red clover seeded into the long-term hayfield

Improving long-term hayfield by seeding red clover and bastard alfalfa into a sod layer resulted in 22‒70% of legume grasses in yield and increase in productivity by 1.9 times in the first 3 years. Red clover stayed sufficiently as a part of improved sward for 3 years while bastard alfalfa — up to 6 years. Legume component of agrophytocenoses increased content of smooth brome up to 53‒66% and reduced proportion of wild grasses down to 7%. Bastard alfalfa had positive effect on linear growth of smooth brome even 5‒6 years after seeding. First 2 years after seeding showed clover to be the main part of sward but later alfalfa took the leading place. Cutting after self-seeding was less effective than seeding legume grasses. Self-seeding increased yield capacity by raising the proportion of smooth brome in botanical composition of sward, but the effect was short. Seeding legume grasses improved crude protein content up to 13.45‒15.87% in hay. However, two cuts showed the fodder obtained to have high concentration of crude fiber — 34.5‒37.39%.
