• • • Technology of silage production from perennial legume grasses

Production of high-quality silage from perennial legume grasses is a very difficult process due to high water content and buffering capacity of plants in the early stage of their growth under the highest nutritional value of dry matter. Shifting of cutting or wilting times results in unevadable losses of nutritional value that must stay within the permissible range. Our investigations revealed that nutritional value of clover decreased due to wilting procedure, while alfalfa and eastern goat’s rue — due to later cutting.

Wilting clover at flowering time led to unacceptable (over 10%) reduction of energy and protein contents. Making silage from fresh plants provided optimal acidity only for clover at the time of flower-bud formation, treated by chemical (“MiBAS-K”) and biological preparations and at flowering time under the biopreparation treatment. Wilted clover mass at bud formation and flowering times as well as eastern goat’s rue at bud formation period gave better silage, compared to the freshly cut grasses.
