The paper deals with the effect of environment on seed productivity of smooth and erect brome for plant breeding and optimal strategy of individual selection. Temperature and humidity greatly affected productivity of smooth brome in April (r = 0.72) and erect brome — in June (r = 0.74). Correlations between hydrothermal conditions and seed productivity at tillering period were average for both species (r = 0.56–0.59). Seed productivity of smooth brome varied within 0.30 and 0.66 t ha-1, (Сv = 32.5 %) and for erect brome — within 0.25–0.46 t ha-1 (Cv = 25.2 %). Number of generative shoots influenced productivities of both species (r = 0.94–0.99). Sward density, rising with time reduced inflorescence-forming capacity of shoots. Generative shoot number varied significantly both for smooth and erect brome. High variations in seed productivity and generative shoot number indicate a potential for effective selection in the populations. Plant height had significant effect on dry matter yield for smooth brome (r = 0.84), being insignificant for erect brome (r = –0.06) due to radical rosette leaf formation. Regional varieties and wild population of smooth and erect brome are more effective as parental forms in breeding for high seed productivity.
