• • • Lupine as forage crop in the Non-Chernozem Region of Russia

The research took place on the All-Russian Research Institute of Lupine in the Bryansk region in 2006–2013. It aimed at testing blue lupine and soybean for the main parameters of forage and energy value in crop rotation. The experiment included six crop rotations (spring rapeseed – lupine/soybean, spring rapeseed – lupine/soybean – barley, spring rapeseed – lupine/soybean – barley – winter rapeseed – lupine/soybean – spring wheat). Three farming techniques were used (extensive, moderate, intensive), differing in rates of chemicals.

Blue lupine gave high grain yields, showing high nutritional value and low energy costs for forage production, even under extensive farming with no fertilization and crop protection, compared to soybean. Lupine exceeded soybean in digestible protein content by 200 kg ha-1. In the systems of crop rotation blue lupine had higher energy content than soybean. Lupine sowing efficiency coefficient amounted to 2.2 under three chemical rates while the soybean ones was 1.9 under the moderate level of inputs. Lupine cultivation in crop rotation according to extensive and intensive farming was not effective with regard to energy efficiency. Sowing efficiency coefficient made up 0.95.
