Forage requirements in the Samara region expect to be fulfilled by 75–80% through perennial grass cultivation. Grass cultivation must be based on regional conditions. Northern and Central regions should contain swards for hay-haylage production, while southern area additionally includes pasture development. Crops and grass mixture should vary among the different fields but alfalfa, eastern goat’s rue, yellow melilot and smooth brome perform as general leading grasses in the Northern and Central regions. These regions are also suitable for meadow fescue, red clover, fodder burnet and slender wheat grass. Southern regions, experiencing precipitation deficit cultivate hybrid medick, hungarian sainfoin, yellow and white melilots, smooth brome, wheat grass, intermediate and elongated wheatgrasses as well as Russian wild rye for pastures. Annual crops with high protein content combined with gramineous are of great value. The department tested their cultivation technologies, effective crop ratio, seeding and cutting date, mineral nutrition, fodder quality and productivity. The obtained data allows successful cultivation of multi-component mixtures of oats, barley, spring vetch, sunflower, oil radish, yielding 24.9–26.9 t green mass ha-1, 7.1–8.4 t dry mass ha-1 and 25–128 g digestible protein per feed unit. The department analyzed maze mixtures with beans and soybean.
