Maize is one of the best high-energy components in livestock diet. Incomplete ripeness of maize grain in the Non-Chernozem region led to development of the processing technology for high-moisture grain via rolling and storing in sealed plastic bags. Compared to complete ripeness, harvesting of high-moisture grain has the number of advantages. Conservants are used to reduce the intensity of biochemical processes and increase nutrient concentration in grain. Conservant selection depends on its effectiveness, relevance in use, safety for livestock, environmental friendliness, shelf life and price. This paper focuses on effectiveness of various conservants when rolling maize grain. The optimal rates of conservants, inhibiting biochemical processes were determined. Bioconservant “Biotrof-111” and 30% NaCl solution reduced the concentration of CO2 by 23.7 and 11.3%, respectively, compared to the control. Significant inhibition of fermentation happened after the treatment by 25% NH4OH solution and Finnish conservant AIV-2000+ — by 75.2 and 70.1%, respectively. AIV-2000+ provided the highest nutrient content with 95% of sugar concentration. Despite good quality and low price the disadvantages of NaCl and NH4OH were the high treatment rate (over 20 l/t). The highest content of crude protein after NH4OH application occurred due to the involvement of non-protein N of the preparation into the crude protein calculation.
