This report has a short review of state and promising aspects in seed production of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in Russia. The influence of various cover crops was tested on tall fescue “Lira” regarding its shoot and seed formation as well as seed yield. Standard seeding rates of such cover crops as barley, vetch-oats mixture or annual ryegrass resulted in tall fescue loss of 21‒32%. Seed yield of tall fescue was 41‒53% lower in the first year, compared to pure sowing. Seed productivities in the second and third year were also 14‒27 and 30‒36% lower, respectively, compared to open sowing. Reduction in seeding rate of cover crops by 30% led to better performance of tall fescue. Number of generative shoots and seed yield dropped by 19‒40 and 29‒49% in the first year, respectively, compared to pure sowing. Second year showed decrease in seed yield of open sowing by 5%, compared to the previous year while productivity of tall fescue improved by 35‒76%, affected by cover crops and varied insignificantly. Seed productivity decreased by 6‒18% in the third year, compared to the second one and showed no significant variation with regard to cover crop effect.
