• • • Express measuring of grass moisture content in field
Increase in grass fodder quality keeps the leading position in forage security improvement. Low quality of top bulky feeds results in significant raise of grain forage in livestock diet. Variation in moisture content of cut mass, loss of bulky mass and nutrients due to weather conditions, length of harvesting period, technological practices and equipment affect plant mass quality. The research aimed at monitoring of moisture content of fresh and air-dried grass, using moisture tester prototype without extra probe preparation. The prototype was analyzed in spatial sensitivity of planar capacitive sensor. We determined the value of effective penetration of sensor electromagnetic field into plant material. Microcontroller unit was developed together with a respective software, allowing data display mode, storage of calibration parameters, creation of data base, calculation of mean values and connection to an external computer. Prototype tests in field showed its adequate response to required criteria in intensive feed preparation technology. The conducted work provided structural concept of measurements, developed and tested new field device. The moisture tester determined the water content within a range of up to 85% as well as grass electrical conductivity directly in windrows and swath with no probe preparation.
